1956 - Nat 'King' Cole was beaten onstage by racists in Birmingham, Alabama.
1959 - Born this day, Brian Setzer, guitar, vocals, The Stray Cats, 1980 UK No.9 single Runaway Boys. 1983 US No.3 single Stray Cat Strut. Brian Setzer Orchestra.

1962 - Died this day, Stuart Sutcliffe, the original bass player for The Beatles, of a brain hemorrhage on this date aged 22. He had left the fledgling group less than a year earlier to attend art school on a grant in Hamburg, Germany. Prior to his death, he suffered violent headaches and temper tantrums which made it difficult for his fiancee, photographer Astrid Kichener, and her mother to take care of him. Long after the talented young man's death, Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and former drummer Pete Best felt the heartache and loss of Sutcliffe's premature death.
1970 - Paul McCartney issued a press statement, announcing his leaving of The Beatles, officially breaking up the most successful rock group in world history. He claimed the split was due to personal, business, and musical differences.

1990 - Tom Waites took Doritos Chips to court for using a 'Waites' soundalike on radio adverts, the jury awarded him $2.475 million in punitive damages, Waites commented after the case, 'now by law I have what I always felt I had... a distinctive voice'.
1998 - Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland married Heather McMillan, the honeymoon was spent visiting amusement parks across the country.
1999 - A charity tribute concert for the late Linda McCartney was held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Among the performers were Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hynde, George Michael, Elvis Costello and Sinead O'Connor.
2001 - Eminem was given 2 years probation and fined £1,800 and £3,600 cost’s after admitting carring a concealed weapon. The charges followed an incident outside a club in Warren, Michigan last June when Eminem ‘pistol whipped’ John Guerra after he saw him kissing his wife.
2003 - Died this day, Little Eva, singer, of cervical cancer. 1962 US No.1 and UK No.2 single The Loco-Motion. Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, she was their babysitter, and they asked her to record a song they had just written.
2007 – The wooden lakeside home in Tennessee, once the home of country icon Johnny Cash burned down as renovations were under way for its new owner, Barry Gibb, of the Bee Gees. Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, lived together in the home just outside of Nashville from 1968 until they died within months of each other in 2003.
