1956 - Six whites attacked popular black singer Nat King Cole as he performed before an all-white audience in Birmingham, Alabama. They were later indicted for the assault.
1956 - While travelling from Amarillo to Nashville, the plane that Elvis Presley was flying on developed engine trouble and was forced to make an emergency landing. The incident created a fear of flying for Presley. ((He really should have had a chat with Buddy Holly about that one!))
1961 - Bob Dylan, at 19, made his New York City stage debut on this date at Gerde's Folk City, a small Greenwich Village club supporting John Lee Hooker.

1981 - Wedding bells chimed for guitarist, Eddie Van Halen and actress, Valerie Bertinelli of One Day at a Time on CBS-TV. The couple were married in Los Angeles, California. Van Halen was born in Nijmegen, The Netherlands and moved to Pasadena, California in 1968. David Lee Roth was a member of the group, as was rocker, Sammy Hagar, who replaced Roth in 1981. The group was founded in 1974. On the Van Halen hit list, these toe tappers: Jump, Dance the Night Away, (Oh) Pretty Woman, Why Can’t This Be Love, Dreams and When It’s Love.
1981 - Hall and Oates started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with Kiss On My List, the duo's second US No.1, and a No.33 hit in the UK.
1991 - Paula Abdul held a press conference in Hollywood to deny allegations that backing vocalist Yvete Marine had sung uncredited lead parts on Paula's Forever Your Girl LP.

1992 - Def Leppard scored their second UK No.1 album with Adrenalize the follow up to the multi million selling Hysteria album.
1997 - Paul McCartney gave a 20-minute concert from the roof of a building he owns in London.
1999 - Former Eastenders actress Martine McCutcheon started a two week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with her debut release Perfect Moment.
2001 - Died this day, Sir Harry Donald Secombe, singer, actor, comedian, of prostrate cancer at home at the age of 79. He had suffered a stroke in 1999, after which he retired from showbusiness.
Harry developed a skill at impersonating his teachers early in school, and while in the Army, he applied it to his superiors. The Goon Show ran from 28 May 1951 until 23 February 1959.
2007 – Sheryl Crow was voted as the US female celebrity who is “Most Unlucky in Love” by In Touch magazine. Failed romances with Tour De France legend, Lance Armstrong as well as Eric Clapton, Kid Rock and Owen Wilson gave her the “unluckiest” tag. She beat off Jennifer Anniston into 2nd place and American Idol judge, Paula Abdul, into 3rd.
2012 – Number 1 song in NZ (sales/digital download) is “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. “21” by Adele has reclaimed the number 1 album spot and it has returned to the top in a record 11 separate occasions. In all the album has topped the charts for a record 35 weeks…and counting!
