1967 - Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra started a 4 week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with Somethin' Stupid. The only father and daughter act ever to score a No.1 single. UB40 singer Ali Cambell covered the song in 95 with his daughter Kibbi.

1968 - Born this day, Ed O'Brien [Edward John O'Brien], rock musician, guitarist, Radiohead, 1997 UK No.1 and US No.21 album OK Computer.

1982 - Billy Joel spent a month in hospital after breaking his left wrist when his motorbike hit a car in Long Island, New York.

1989 - American all girl group The Bangles started a four week run at No.1 in the UK with the single Eternal Flame.

1989 - The Fine Young Cannibals went to No.1 in the US singles chart with She Drives Me Crazy.

1996 - Milli Vanilli singer Rob Pilatus was jailed for 90 days by a Los Angeles judge for three violent attacks and parole violation.

1996 - The rest of Jerry Garcia's ashes were scattered near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. A small portion had been scattered in the Ganges River in India 11 days earlier. The Grateful Dead leader had died on 9 August 1995.

2001 - Died this day, punk pioneer Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman)(aka Jeff Starship)- The King Of Punk, after losing a long battle with lymphatic cancer. He was 49. Was born 19 May 1951 in the New York City community of Forest Hills, NY. He did, Mr. Punchy and Don't Worry About Me, he was the lead singer and a founding member of The Ramones. They did, I Wanna Be Sedated, Pinhead and Sheena Is A Punk Rocker. He co-produced She Talks To Rainbows for Ronnie Spector. His band helped start the punk rock movement.
