TODAY IN HISTORY – APRIL 21ST

1947 - Born this day, Iggy Pop [James Jewel Osterberg], rock singer, musician, in Michigan, USA. Iggy took the name 'Pop' after a junkie called Jim Popp.

1959 - Born this day, Robert Smith, rock singer, guitar, vocals, The Cure, 1992 UK No.6 single Friday I'm In Love plus over 20 other UK top 40 singles.

1963 - The Beatles and the Rolling Stones met for the first time at the Crawdaddy Club in The Crawdaddy Club, Station Hotel, Richmond, England. The Stones opened the show, they were paid £50 for the gig.

1970 - Elton John made his solo concert debut, opening for T Rex in London.

1977 - Annie, a musical based on Harold Gray's comic strip Little Orphan Annie, debuted on Broadway. The play received rave reviews, and Dorothy Louden, who played the sinister orphanage matron, received a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy for her performance.

1979 - Amii Stewart went to No.1 on the US singles chart with Knock On Wood, it made No.6 in the UK the same year and No.7 when re-issued in 1985.

1982 - Joe Strummer disappeared for three weeks, which resulted in The Clash cancelling a tour. He was found living rough in Paris.

1984 - Michael Jackson’s Thriller album slipped a couple of notches from number 1 to number 3 on the pop album charts. Michael need not have been too upset. Thriller was number one for 37 weeks, setting a record in music history for the longest run at the top.

1984 - The film soundtrack to Footloose went to No.1 on the US album chart.

1984 - Phil Collins started a three week run at No.1 in the US singles chart with the theme tune from Against All Odds. It was Phil's first US No.1, and also a No.2 in the UK.

1990 - Paul McCartney played in front of 184,000 spectators in Rio, creating a new world record for the largest crowd attending a rock concert.

1990 - Sinead O'Connor started a four week stay at No.1 in the US singles chart with her version of the Prince song Nothing Compares To You. It made No.1 in 18 other countries.

1993 - Ex Rolling Stone Bill Wyman married for the third time when he tied the knot with 33-year-old fashion designer Suzanne Accosta on the French Riveria.

2001 - REM guitarist Peter Buck was charged by police at Heathrow airport with being drunk on an aircraft and assaulting British Airways crew. Buck was taken into custody after landing on a flight from Seattle and was questioned by police for 12 hours.

2013 – NZ’s version of “The X Factor” debuted on NZ screens featuring judges, Stan Walker, Ruby Frost, Melanie Blatt and Daniel Beddingfield.
