1890 - Australian country music pioneer Banjo Paterson's poem, The Man from Snowy River, was first published as a supplement to the Bulletin. Over 10,000 copies were sold during the following year.

1945 - Born this day, Tony Murray, The Troggs, 1966 US No.1 and UK No.2 single Wild Thing.

1949 - Look magazine made a major announcement. The publication said that radio was doomed and that within three years, TV would overshadow radio completely.

1960 - Born this day, Roger Taylor, rock musician, drums, Duran Duran, 1983 UK No.1 single Is There Something I Should Know, plus 25 other UK top 40 singles, 1984 US No.1 single The Reflex, also with Arcadia, 1985 UK No.7 single Election Day.

1966 - Dusty Springfield was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, the singer's only UK No.1.

1970 - Born this day, Tionne Watkins, T-Boz, rap singer, vocals, TLC, 1995 US No.1 and UK No.4 single Waterfalls.

1977 - New York's Studio 54 disco had its opening night. In attendance was Cher.

1980 - The Beat released Mirror In The Bathroom, the first digitally recorded single in the UK.

1982 - Rod Stewart was mugged by a gunman along Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard while standing next to his car.

1986 - Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music started a five week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with Street Life - 20 Greatest Hits..

1986 - Van Halen started a three week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 5150.

1990 - New Kids On The Block's Danny Wood injured his ankle while on stage in Manchester when he tripped over a toy animal thrown on stage by a fan, he was forced to fly back to the States for treatment.

1995 - Courtney Love reportedly turned down Playboy magazine's $1 million offer for her to pose nude.

1997 - Died ths day, Ernest Stewart, keyboard player with KC & The Sunshine Band, of an asthma atack. 1975 US No.1 single That's The Way, I Like It, 1983 UK No.1 single Give It Up.

2001 - One of Madonna's eye-popping conical bras sold for $21,150 today at a pop memorabilia auction, it was snapped up by a Chilean fashion museum. The memorable fashion statement, a fixture of the pop diva's 1990 Blond Ambition Tour, rivaled a page of handwritten lyrics by Beatles legend Paul McCartney, which was bought by an unidentified private collector for $29,960, Christie's auction house said. The auction featured more than 200 pieces of memorabilia, including an autographed letter sent by John Lennon to a fan and a suit worn on stage by Eric Clapton. The Museum of Fashion and Textiles in Santiago, Chile, emerged the winner of unexpectedly high bidding for Madonna's black and fuchsia Jean-Paul Gaultier bra. A Christie's spokeswoman said the bra was expected to fetch only $4,500. The seller, who was not identified, won the bra in a British radio contest, the spokeswoman said on customary condition of anonymity.

2002 - Died this day, Lisa Lopes, former TLC member, was killed in a car accident in La Ceiba, Honduras aged 30. Lopes was driving the car when it crashed.
