TODAY IN HISTORY – 29th April

1942 – Klaus Voorman was born this day.  He played in both Manfred Mann and the Plastic Ono Band (with John Lennon) but is perhaps more famous for designing the cover for the Beatles album “Reveolver”.

1947 – Born this day, Tommy James, had number 1 hit in UK with Mony Mony which was later covered successfully by Billy Idol.

1949 – Born this day, Francis Rossi, guitarist and vocals with the timeless UK band Status Quo.

1958 – The Broadway Musical, My Fair Lady, opened for its first night in London.

1967 – Atlantic Records released Respect by Aretha Franklin.

1968 – Born this day, Carnie Wilson, daughter of Beach Boy, Brian Wilson, and singer with band Wilson Phillips.

1976 – After a gig in Memphis, Bruce Springsteen took a cab to Elvis Presley’s Graceland home and proceeded to climb over the wall.  A guard took him to be another crank and apprehended him.

1978 – The theme from the film Saturday Night Fever gave the Bee Gees their 3rd UK number 1 with “Night Fever”.

1988 – Eric Clapton filed for divorce from Patti “Layla” Boyd.

1992 – Paula Abdul married actor Emilio Estevez,  They separated on 10 May 1994.

1997 – Boy George was accused of being a “professional liar” by musician singer, Kirk Brandon during a London court hearing.  Brandon was in court suing the singer over claims in George’s autobiography that the pair had slept together.

2001 – Rod Stewart asked for wedding vows to be brought up to date and should be treated like a dog licence.  Stewart said, “a change is needed because they’ve been in existence for 600 years when people used to live until they were 35”.

2009 – Smithfield freezing worker, Robbie Robertson, has his song, “Billy The Hunted” played on Port FM the night after he features on a TV3 news bulletin about the song .  The song is about fugitive, William Wallace, who has now been on the run from police for 3 months in the central south island area.
