1944 - Born this day, Michele Gilliam [Holly Michelle Gilliam], in Long Beach, California, singer, actress, The Mama & Papas, 1966 US No.1 and UK No.3 single Monday Monday, (married band member John Phillips).
1965 - The Beach Boys recorded California Girls.
1968 - Pink Floyd announced founder Syd Barrett had officially left the group. He was suffering from psychiatric disorders compounded by drug use.
1968 - The Beatles Apple Corps Ltd. record company, management and publishing firm, opened their offices in London.
1971 - Rolling Stone Records, with the infamous 'lips' logo, was formed to promote the hits of The Rolling Stones. Brown Sugar was the first hit by the Rolling Stones on the new label, followed by Wild Horses, Tumbling Dice and Bill Gates’ favourite song, Start Me Up. It was with a $5 million deal with Atlantic Records. The famous Stones trademark: the lips logo - became widely used.

With more than 20 country hits under her belt, the song most associated with her was Stand By Your Man, which became a part of 1990's headlines when new First Lady Hilary Clinton used the song and Wynette to illustrate her point that she was not a mousy little housewife 'baking cookies' at home. Wynette was only 55 years old. She sold over 30 million records world-wide, was married 5 times and once filed for bankruptcy.
