1912 - Born this day, [Woodrow Wilson] Woody Guthrie, folk singer, songwriter, in Okemah, Oklahoma. He did This Land Is Your Land and I Ain't Got No Home. Was one of the Almanac Singers. Worked with Pete Seeger. Is the father of Arlo Guthrie. Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductee. Died 3 October 1967 from Huntington's Chorea.
1952 - Born on this day, Bob Casale, best known as a guitarist and keyboardist in the new wave band Devo. He engineered the first solo album for Police guitarist Andy Summers. Casale died on February 17, 2014.
1963 – Maud Ruby Basham, known to a generation as “Aunt Daisy” died in Wellington, aged 83. She was popular on the ZB radio network from 1936 until just a couple of weeks before her death and her show always began with a breezy “Good morning everyone”.
1973 - A drunk driver killed Clarence White of The Byrds while he was loading equipment after a gig in Palmdale, California.
1973 - During a concert at the John Wayne Theatre in Hollywood, California, Phil Everly smashed his guitar and stormed off stage, Don finished the set by himself and announced that The Everly Brothers had split. (Another source says - split up during an onstage fight at Knott's Berry Farm in California.)
1979 - Donna Summer scored her third No.1 US single when Bad Girls, hit the top, the album of the same name also started a five week run at No.1.
1980 - Bryan Ferry collapsed in his hotel room in France and was flown to London suffering from a kidney infection.
1982 - Pink Floyd's The Wall, had it's movie premier in London.
1984 - Phillippe Wynne lead singer with The Detroit Spinners died of a heart attack while performing at Ivey's nightclub in Oakland, California, aged 43. With The Detroit Spinners had the 1980 UK No.1 & US No.2 single 'Working My Way Back To You.'
1988 - Michael Jackson gave himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for setting a new attendance record, when he played the first of seven nights at Wembley Stadium in London. The shows on his Bad World Tour were attended by a total of 504,000 fans beating the record previously held by Genesis, with four sold out nights.
1989 - Welsh singer Tom Jones, age 48, lost a paternity suit filed by Katherine Berkery, 27, who spent three nights with the entertainer at New York's Ritz-Carlton Hotel two years earlier. A blood and tissue test showed there was a 99.76% probability that Jones was the father of 1-year-old Jonathan Jones Berkery. Jones, who was married, "never showed up in court to explain or deny" that the child was his, said Berkery's defense lawyer. Jones was ordered to pay Berkery $200 a week to maintain the child.
1992 - Olivia Newton-John disclosed that she had breast cancer.
1997 - Walkers Spice Girls Crisps went on sale in the UK, over 16 million bags were sold by the end of the year.
1999 - Paul McCartney's exhibition of paintings, which were on display in the small German town of Siegen, were highly praised in the British press. The Times newspaper, which had judged harshly some of McCartney's recent creative projects like much of the UK media, applauded the paintings, which McCartney had painted between 1988 and 1995.
2000 - Five became the latest pop idols to call for the legalisation of cannabis. J and Richie told Sky magazine that the drug should no longer be outlawed 'No one who smokes a spliff goes out and starts fights like someone who's been drinking'.
2003 - Plans for Sting to write an official anthem for Tuscany came under fire by locals who insisted the job should go to an Italian and not a foreigner. The British pop star owned a house in Tuscany and had been nominated to compose the anthem by Franco Banchi who lived nearby.
2007 - A pair of glasses worn by former Beatle John Lennon sparked a bidding war after being offered for sale online. The circular sunglasses were worn by Lennon during the Beatles 1966 tour of Japan, where the band played some of their last ever live dates. Anonymous rival bidders had pushed the price as high as £750,000 at online auction house 991.com.
2013 - The death of Glee star Cory Monteith has elicited an outpouring of grief from all corners of Hollywood, while girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele is struggling to come to terms with the loss.
The Glee stars had been dating for over a year and their characters Finn Hudson and Rachel Berry also enjoyed a romance on the show. Michele had stood by her boyfriend following his decision to enter rehab a few months ago.
