TODAY IN HISTORY - July 2nd

1939 - Born this day, Paul Williams, in Birmingham, Alabama, vocals, The Temptations, 1971 US No.1 and UK No.8 single Just My Imagination and re-issued My Girl UK No.2 single in 1992. Died 17 August 1973 after shooting himself.

1954 - Born this day, Pete Briquette, musician, bassist, singer, The Boomtown Rats, 1979 UK No.1 single I Don't Like Mondays, plus 10 other UK top 40 singles.

1956 - Elvis Presley recorded Hound Dog (Take 31 being the version released) and Don't Be Cruel for his new record label home, RCA Victor, New York. In addition, Elvis recorded Any Way You Want Me for later release. This was the first time The Jordanaires worked with Presley.

1956 - Born this day, Jerry Hall, in Mesquite, Texas, model. Became Mrs Mick Jagger in 1990.

1957 - Born this day, Mike Anger, rock musician, The Blow Monkeys, 1987 UK No.5 single It Doesn't Have To Be This Way.

1962 - Jimi Hendrix was honourably discharged from the 101st Airborne Paratroopers, after breaking his ankle during his 26th and final parachute jump.

1966 - Frank Sinatra went to No.1 on the US singles chart with Strangers In The Night. The song was taken from the film A Man Could Get Killed. Also a No.1 in the UK.

1969 - The single Something In The Air gave Thunderclap Newman a UK No.1 single for 3 weeks. It was produced by Pete Townshend.

1973 - Roxy Music's synthesiser player Brian Eno, quit after personality clashes with main man Bryan Ferry.

1976 - Tina Turner walked out on her abusive husband Ike.

1977 - Hot Chocolate had their only UK No.1 single with So You Win Again. They scored over 20 other UK top 40 hits.

1979 - Sony introduced the Walkman, the first portable audio cassette player. Over the next 30 years they sold over 385 million Walkmans in cassette, CD, mini-disc and digital file versions, and were the market leaders until the arrival of Apple's iPod and other new digital devices.

1982 - Nicky Headon of The Clash was remanded on bail, charged with stealing a bus stop worth £30 from London's' Fulham Road.

1983 - Rod Stewart had his sixth UK No.1 single with Baby Jane.

1984 - Epic Records set a record as two million copies of the Jacksons' new album, Victory, were shipped to stores. It was the first time that such a large shipment had been initially sent to retailers. The LP arrived just days before Michael and his brothers started their hugely successful Victory Tour. 

1988 - Michael Jackson went to No.1 on the US singles chart with Dirty Diana, a No.4 hit in the UK.

1988 - Tracy Chapman started a three week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with her self titled debut LP. Helped by her performance at the 'Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Tribute Concert' at Wembley Stadium. It was also a No.1 in the US.

1991 - Axle Rose caused a riot to break out after leaping into the crowd to remove a camera from a fan at the Riverpoint Amphitheatre, Maryland Heights. Over 50 people were injured and 15 fans were arrested.

1992 - Mick Jagger became a grandfather when his daughter Jade gave birth.

2001 - Yoko Ono, the widow of murdered Beatle John Lennon, visited the airport named for her late husband and said he would have been 'very proud'. "Thank you very, very much for remembering John and for loving John," Ono said as she introduced the new logo for Liverpool John Lennon Airport. "John always reminded of us of the sense of fun in life. I hope the airport will send a great message to all corners of the world. As John said, there is no hell below us, above us only skies." The airport's new logo includes a Lennon self-portrait and the printed line "Above us only sky," from his song Imagine. The airport will become Liverpool John Lennon Airport when a new terminal opens in the northern English city in the spring of 2002.

2008 - The gravestone of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis was stolen. Cheshire Police said his memorial stone was taken from where he is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery. Officers were appealing for anyone with information on its whereabouts, detectives said the stone, had the inscription ‘Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80’ and the words ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

2008 – The “Big Energy in a Can Tour” hits Timaru with Opshop and Luke Thompson playing at the Theatre Royal.
