1922 - Born this day, Judy Garland [Frances Gumm], in Michigan, actress, singer (Wizard of Oz). Died 22 June 1969 of a barbituate overdose. Played Dorothy in the 1939 film Wizzard Of Oz, sang Over The Rainbow in the film, made a 1961 US No.1 comeback album Judy At Carnegie Hall. Over The Rainbow was voted the 'Song Of The Century' in a 2001 poll published in America.
1964 - Born this day, Jimmy Chamberlin, rock musician, drums, Smashing Pumpkins, 1995 US No.1 album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, 1996 UK No.7 single Tonight Tonight.
1964 - The first edition of the official Rolling Stones book was issued, priced at one and six, (the publication ran for 30 issues). Also on this day, at producers Phil Spector’s suggestion, The Stones recorded It's All Over Now, I Can’t Be Satisfied and Time Is On My Side at Chess studios in Chicago. During the day, the Stones got to meet, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy and Chuck Berry.
1964 - On their first world tour The Beatles took a flight from Hong Kong to Australia making an unscheduled fuel stop in Darwin, where over 400 fans greet their aircraft. The Beatles then fly on to Sydney, where they arrive in the middle of a heavy downpour. The group were required to appear in an open-top truck in the pouring rain to wave at the 1,000's of fans greeting them at the airport.
1966 - The first use of reversed tape was heard in the song Rain (or "niaR") by the Beatles. The tune was the 'B' side of Paperback Writer. The technique was discovered and refined by John Lennon - by accident. It was used in several other songs by the group.
1972 - Sammy Davis, Jr. earned his place at the top of the popular music charts for the first time, after years in the entertainment business. His number one song, The Candy Man stayed at the top for three consecutive weeks. The Candy Man was truly a song of fate for Sammy. He openly did not want to record the song, but did so as a favour to MGM Records head Mike Curb, since it was to be used in the film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Davis said he would give the tune one take, "and that's it!" Sure enough, in that one-time recording, Sammy nailed it. The Candy Man stayed on the pop charts for 16 weeks. The best the legendary performer had done before was 12 weeks for Love Me or Leave Me in 1955 and 11 weeks for I've Gotta Be Me (from Golden Rainbow) in 1969. After The Candy Man became a hit, Davis included it in his stage shows and concerts - and collected huge royalties from it.
1977 - Joe Strummer and Nicky Headon were each fined £5 by a London court for spray-painting The Clash on a wall.
1978 - John Travolta and Olivia Newton John went to No.1 on the US singles chart with You're The One That I Want. It also made No.1 in the UK.
1986 - Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead went into a five day diabetic coma, resulting in the band withdrawing from their current tour.
1989 - Bette Midler went to No.1 on the US singles chart with Wind Beneath My Wings. It was taken from the film Beaches, and was also a No.5 hit in the UK.
1989 - Jason Donovan had his second UK No.1 single with his version of Sealed With A Kiss.
1991 - Temptation Eddie Kendricks was arrested while attending the funeral of David Ruffin in Detroit, on charges of owing $26,000 in child support.
1993 - Irish singer Sinead O'Connor took out a full-page ad in the Irish Times asking the public to "stop hurting me please." She blamed her troubles on abuse she suffered as a child. O'Connor was still being criticized for ripping up a picture of the Pope during an appearance on Saturday Night Live the previous October.
1998 - Former Oak Ridge Boys member Steve Sanders was found dead early in the morning in Coral Gables, Florida, where he was living. He was 45. Sanders reportedly died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound. Sanders, who replaced Oak Ridge Boys member William Lee Golden in 1987, departed from the award-winning country group in 1996.
2003 - Kim Mathers, the ex-wife of rapper Eminem, was arrested and released pending further investigation in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, for driving with a revoked license. Two Ziploc bags containing a 'white powdery substance' were found in the glove box of the white Cadillac.
2004 - Ray Charles died aged 73. Glaucoma rendered Chares blind at the age of 6. Had the 1962 UK & US No.1 single 'I Can't Stop Loving You' plus over 30 US Top 40 singles.
2007 - The Rolling Stones performed for the first time ever at the Isle of Wight Festival in Newport, England, where they appear as headliners. Paolo Nutini and Amy Winehouse both guest with the band onstage.
2009 - The daughter of Cher, Chastity Bono was set to undergoing a sex change to become a man. The gender-swap process began shortly after Bono's 40th birthday in March and more than a decade after she came out as a lesbian.
