TODAY IN HISTORY – MARCH 6TH 

1944 – Dame Kiri Te Kanawa – born this day in Gisborne, New Zealand.  One of the world’s most celebrated sopranos.  In 1981, she was seen and heard around the world by an estimated 600 million people when she sang Handel’s “Le the Bright Seraphim” at the wedding of Charles and Diana.  Has been involved in some controversy too.  In 2003 she angered some Maori by being critical of the high rate of welfare dependence among Maori, in 2007 she cancelled a concert with John Farnham after discovering some fans threw their underwear on stage and in 2008 criticised “Popera” singers such as Hayley Westenra.

1946 - Born this day, Murray Head, in Scotland, UK singer, 1984 UK No.1 and 1985 US No.3 single One Night In Bangkok.

1946 - Born this day, David Gilmour, in Cambridge, England, Pink Floyd guitarist and vocals (joined Jan 1968), 1973 US No.1 and UK No.2 album Dark Side Of The Moon, spent a record breaking 741 weeks on the US chart.

1947 - Born this day, Kiki Dee [Pauline Matthews], in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, singer, 1973 UK No.13 single Amoureuse, 1974 UK No.19 single I Got The Music In Me, 1976 UK and US No.1 single Don't Go Breaking My Heart with Elton John, 1981 UK No.13 single Star, 1993 UK No.2 single True Love with Elton John.

1965 - The Temptations went to No.1 on the US singles chart with the Smokey Robinson penned song My Girl, making the group the first male act to have a No.1 for Motown. The single only reached No.43 in the UK but made No.2 when re-issued in 1992.

1970 - Awareness records released the Charles Manson album Lie. Manson was unable to promote the LP due to the fact he was serving a life sentence for the Sharon Tate murders.

1982 - Tight Fit started a three week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

1986 - Died this day, The Band's, Richard Manuel hung himself from a shower curtain rod in a hotel room in Florida. Rick Danko guitarist and singer with The Band died in his sleep in 1999 aged 57.

1998 - Oasis singer Liam Gallagher appeared handcuffed in a Brisbane court and was released on bail on charges of headbutting a fan during a gig in Australia.

2001 - A man who hid for 24 hours in the rafters of a cathedral and secretly film the christening of Madonna's baby appeared in court. Security staff discovered the man after the ceremony when he made a noise as he climbed down from the rafters.

2009 – Michael Jackson holds a press conference to announce to the world he is planning comeback shows at London’s O2 Arena in July.  The concerts will net the 50 year old “King of Pop” an estimated 50mill pound. 

2010 – Big Picnic with OJ & Kirsty perform at the Geraldine and Temuka A & P show at the Winchester Showgrounds.

2013 – The most popular song played on NZ Radio over the past week is “Take It Easy” by Stan Walker.
