1948 - Born this day, Steve Winwood, singer, musician, keyboards, Spencer Davis Group, 1966 UK No.1 single Keep On Running, with Traffic, 1967 UK No.2 single Hole In My Shoe, with Blind Faith, 1969 UK and US No.1 album Blind Faith, and solo, 1986 US No.1 and UK No.1 single Higher Love.
1960 - Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley appeared on the same TV special (The Frank Sinatra Timex TV Special), performing each other's hit. Elvis sang Witchcraft and Sinatra sang Love Me Tender. (the two of them sing a medley of Love Me Tender and Witchcraft).
1963 - Singer Bob Dylan walked out of dress rehearsals for The Ed Sullivan Show when CBS censors told him couldn't perform his Talking John Birch Society Blues, saying that it could be considered libelous. Dylan later refused to appear on the show.
1965 - The Rolling Stones recorded (I Can’t Get No), Satisfaction at RCA Hollywood studios. Keith had come up with the guitar riff in the middle of the night a week earlier. It gave the band their first No.1 single in the US.
1967 - Are You Experienced, the debut album by Jimi Hendrix was released in the UK.
1968 - Jimi Hendrix was arrested by police on his way to Toronto for possession of hashish and heroin. Hendrix claimed the drugs had been planted.
1971 - The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger married Bianca Perez Morena de Macias at St Tropez Town Hall. Mick couldn't remember her whole name very well, so she became known as Bianca the world over. They separated in 1977.
1972 – The Rolling Stones released “Exile On Main Street”. Exile on Main St. is a double album by English rock band The Rolling Stones. It was released on 12 May 1972 by Rolling Stones Records. The album's music incorporatesrock and roll, blues, soul, country, and gospel genres.[2]
Although it originally received mixed reviews,[2] Exile on Main St. is generally considered by music critics to be the Rolling Stones' greatest album.[3] In 1987, as part of the magazine's 20th anniversary, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it third on the 100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Years. In 2003, the album was ranked 7th onRolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, the highest Rolling Stones album ranked on the list

1977 - After being dropped by EMI and A&M records in less than 6 months, Virgin records annouced they had signed The Sex Pistols.
1983 - Meat Loaf filed for bankruptcy with debts of over $1 million.
1985 - Lionel Richie received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama - his alma mater. Richie had put 14 hits on the pop charts in the 1980s, including one platinum smash, with Diana Ross, Endless Love and four gold records Truly, All Night Long, Hello and Say You, Say Me. All but one song of the 14 that charted, made it to the top ten.
1986 - Joe Strummer of The Clash was banned from driving after being convicted of drink driving.
1996 - 17-year-old Bernadette O'Brien died the day after being injured 'body surfing' at The Smashing Pumpkins gig at The Point, Dublin.
2000 - Thieves stole the gates to Strawberry Fields the Merseyside landmark immortalised by The Beatles song. The gates were later found at local scrap metal dealers.
2002 - Dionne Warwick was arrested at a Miami airport for marijuana possession (the charges were dropped after she completed a drug program and made a contribution to charity).
