1944 - Born this day, [John Robert] Joe Cocker, singer, songwriter, 1968 UK No.1 single With A Little Help From My Friends, plus 8 other UK top 40 singles, 1982 US No.1 single with Jennifer Warnes Up Where We Belong.

1946 - Born this day, Cher [Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPiere], in El Centro, California, singer, actress. She worked as a backing singer on many of Phil Spectors hits. Cher scored the 1964 novelty hit Ringo I Love You as Bonnie Jo Mason. Her biggest hit as Sonny & Cher was the 1965 world-wide hit I Got You Babe. In 1991, 25 years after her chart debut, Cher scored her first solo UK No.1 single with The Shoop Shoop Song. Cher married Greg Allman in 1975 four days after divorcing Sonny Bono. She split with Greg after 10 days, followed by a three year on and off marriage.

David Bowie made his US TV debut performing Fame, on the Cher CBS-TV show. She won an Academy Award for best actress for her work in Moonstruck. Other acting roles include, Mask, and The Witches Of Eastwick. She made a special video for the troops involved in Desert Storm, during the Gulf war. Cher's Video Canteen featured Janet Jackson, Paul Simon, Van Halen and Bonnie Raitt. The 1998 world-wide No.1 single Believe, made Cher the first female artist to have a No.1 single over the age of 50.

1958 - Born this day, Jane Wiedlin, rock musician, guitar, vocals, The Go-Go's, 1982 US No.2 single We Got The Beat, 1982 UK No.47 single Our Lips Our Sealed, and solo, 1988 UK No.12 single Rush Hour.

1966 - George Harrison visited Maharishi Yogi for the first time.

1967 - The BBC announced a ban on the Beatles track A Day In The Life from Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, saying that it could promote drug taking. The new album had a special preview on Kenny Everett’s BBC Light programme, Where It’s At.

1972 - T Rex had their fourth and final UK No.1 single with Metal Guru. They also had the UK No.1 album with 'Bolan Boogie'.

1978 - Paul McCartney went to No.1 on the US singles chart with With A Little Luck, it was his sixth solo US No.1.

1978 - The Buddy Holly story film was premiered in Holly's home town, of Lubbock, Texas.

1988 - Priscilla Presley held a press conference to deny that Elvis is still alive. (despite the fact their was a world wide shortage of peanut butter and deep friend jelly donuts she believed him to be deceased)

1989 - Paula Abdul started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with Forever Your Girl, her second US No.1, it was a No.24 hit in the UK.

1995 - Don Henley married model Sharon Summerall. Guests included Billy Joel, Randy Newman, Sheryl Crow, Sting, Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen.

1997 - U2 caused traffic chaos in Kansas City, Missouri after they paid for traffic control to close down five lanes to shoot the video for Last Night On Earth. The following day a Cadillac crashed into a plate glass window to avoid a cameraman.

1998 - Tommy Lee from Motley Crue was sentenced to six months jail after being found guilty of spousal abuse.

2003 - The state of South Carolina pardoned James Brown for all past crimes committed in the state.

2013 – Died this day.  Ray Manzarek, founding member of 1960’s early 1970’s rock band, The Doors.  Manzarek formed The Doors after meeting poet Jim Morrison in California. He was 74.
