TODAY IN HISTORY - November 26th

1939 - Born this day, Tina Turner, soul Queen rock singer, born Annie Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee. Session guitarist Ike Turner started dating Tina in 1956, they married in 1958. Tina first recorded with Ike after a session singer failed to turn up. Ike and Tina Turner toured the UK with The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, and Long John Baldry in 1966.

Her biggest hit was the 1966 UK No.3 Phil Spector produced single with Ike Turner, River Deep Mountain High, 1971 US No.4 single Proud Mary. In 1984, after a 25 year career Tina had her first solo No.1 in the US with What's Love Got To Do With It, she also scored her first UK No.1 solo album in 1989 album with Foreign Affair.

She played the role of the Acid Queen in The Who's film Tommy. Tina left Ike in 1976 after years of abuse. She rebuilt her career by playing cabaret gigs. In 1988 Tina gave herself a place in the record books when she performed in front of 182,000 people, the largest audience ever for a single artist, in Rio De Janerio. The 1992 film What's Love Got To Do With It documented Tina's life with Ike. Tina was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1999 Mobo Awards.

1945 - Born this day, John McVie, singer, musician, guitar, bass, Fleetwood Mac, 1987 UK No.5 single Little Lies, and 1977 US No.1 single Dreams, from the world-wide No.1 album Rumours.

1962 - The Beatles recorded Please Please Me. It was their first recording session under the name the Beatles.

1967 - The promotional film of the Beatles Hello Goodbye was aired on The Ed Sullivan show in the US. It was never shown at the time in the UK due to a musicians union ban on miming.

1968 - In a performance filmed by the BBC, rock group Cream, performed a farewell concert before a capacity crowd at Royal Albert Hall in London. They were supported by Yes and Taste.

1973 - Died this day, John Rostill of The Shadows, after being electrocuted at his home recording studio. The local newspaper ran the headline 'Pop musician dies, guitar apparent cause'.

1976 - Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left 10CC to concentrate on other projects including work on The Gizmo, a device used to make neo-orchestral sounds on a guitar.

1976 - The Sex Pistols released the single 'Anarchy In The UK'. Originally issued in a plain black sleeve, the single was the only Sex Pistols recording released by EMI, and reached No.38 on the UK Singles Chart before EMI dropped the group on 6 January 1977.

1980 - The movie, Wings Over America, premiered in New York City. The flick is about the first American tour of Paul McCartney and Wings.

1981 – Born this day, Natasha Bedingfield.  The singer/songwriter was born in London to NZ parents, Molly and John Bedingfield.  Did a year at university and studied psychology to maker herself a better songwriter.  Her singles include “Unwritten” and “Single” from 2004/5.  Her brother Daniel is also a recording artist.

1983 - In Auckland New Zealand, David Bowie performed to an audience of 80,000 people, breaking the attendence record for the Southern Hemisphere. The biggest concert ever took place on December 31st 1994 when Rod Stewart entertained a crowd of 3.5 million in Copacabana.

1988 - Russian cosmonauts aboard Soyuz 7 took into space a cassette copy (minus the cassette box for weight reasons) of the latest Pink Floyd album Delicate Sound Of Thunder and played it in orbit, making Pink Floyd the first rock band to be played in space. David Gilmour and Nick Mason both attended the launch of the spacecraft.

1990 - The inaugural Billboard Music Awards were held in Santa Monica, California. Janet Jackson was the main winner of the night, winning in eight categories, including Top Pop Album, Top R&B Album and Top R&B Artist.

1990 - Born on this day, British singer-songwriter and actress, Rita Ora. Her debut studio album Ora (2012) debuted at No.1 in the UK, and spawned the No.1 singles 'R.I.P.' and 'How We Do (Party)'.

1991 - US Country singer Garth Brooks asked fans to bring 10 cans of food to a grocery store in exchange for a lottery envelope, some of which contained tickets to see Garth at a forthcoming show. Over 10,000 cans were donated to charity.

1994 - The Eagles started a two week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Hell Freezes Over.

1994 - Boyz II Men started their 14th and final week at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'I'll Make Love To You' giving them the longest run in chart history along with 'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston.

2000 - The Beatles went to No.1 on the US album chart with 'Beatles 1.' The album features virtually every number-one single released from 1962 to 1970. Issued on the 30th anniversary of the band's break-up, it was their first compilation available on one CD. The world's best-selling album of the 21st century, 1 has sold over 31 million copies.

2002 - Actor Nicolas Cage filed for divorce from musician Lisa Marie Presley

2008 - The parents of missing Manic Street Preachers guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards were granted a court order for him to be declared presumed dead, after he disappeared nearly 14 years ago. Despite alleged sightings all over the world many believed to be Edwards, whose car was found near the Severn Bridge, where he was thought to have taken his own life at the age of 27.
