TODAY IN HISTORY – October 3rd

1901 - The Victor Talking Machine Company was incorporated. After a merger with Radio Corporation of America, RCA-Victor became the leader in phonographs and many of the records played on them. The famous Victrola phonograph logo, with Nipper the dog, and the words "His Master's Voice" appeared on all RCA-Victor phonographs and record labels.

1938 - Born this day, Eddie Cochran, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He died 17 April 1960, aged 21. 1958 US No.8 single Summertime Blues, 1960 UK No.1 single Three Steps To Heaven, 1959 UK No.6 single C'Mon Everybody.

1941 - Born this day, Chubby Checker [Ernest Evans], 1960 US No.1 single The Twist, 1962 UK No.2 single Let's Twist Again.

1945 - Elvis Presley made his first ever public appearance in a talent contest at the Mississippi, Alabama Dairy Show, singing Old Shep, Elvis was 10 years old at the time and came second.

1947 - Born this day, Lindsey Buckingham, musician, singer, songwriter, guitarist, Fleetwood Mac, 1987 UK No.5 single Little Lies and 1977 US No.1 single Dreams from world wide No.1 album Rumours.

1954 - Born this day, Stevie Ray Vaughan, guitarist, killed in a helicopter crash 27 August 1990. His family successfully sued the operators of the company for allowing an unqualified pilot to fly in fog and were awarded $2 million.

1962 - Born this day, Tommy Lee, in Greece, drums, Motley Crue, 1988 UK No.23 single You're All I Need and 1989 US No.1 album Dr Feelgood. Married Heather Locklear.

1964 - Baby Love recorded by The Supremes, entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and remained on it for 13 weeks, becoming their second Number 1 release in a row.

1965 - Johnny Cash was arrested at the Mexican border by US Customs with 1,000 amphetamine pills.

1967 - Died this day, Woody Guthrie, folksinger, songwriter, after suffering from Huntington's Chorea disease. Major influence on Bob Dylan and American folk music, 1970s film Bound For Glory is based on his life.

1969 - Born this day, Gwen Stefani, singer, songwriter, No Doubt, 1997 UK No.1 single Don't Speak.

1971 - Born this day, Kevin Richardson, Backstreet Boys, 1997 US No.2 single Quit Playing Games With My Heart, 1999 UK No.1 single I Want It That Way.

1980 - 'The Boss', Bruce Springsteen, forgot some of the words to Born to Run before an enthusiastic opening night crowd in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

1982 - Scott Weiland ran the Detroit marathon backwards in less than 5 hours.

1983 - Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson released Say, Say, Say in the UK. It made #10 on the NZ singles chart.  The song appeared on Paul McCartney’s “Pipes of Peace” LP.

1991 - M.C. Hammer offered a $50,000, reward for the return of Michael Jackson's white glove, which had been stolen from the Motown Museum, in a on-going battle between Hammer and the 'King Of Pop' Jackson.

1992 - Sinead O'Connor ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II, on the TV show 'Saturday Night Live' in America, in a protest at abortion laws.

1997 - A court battle started between Garth Brooks and Warren G over the trademark of the letter ‘G’ which both artists used. The dispute was settled out of court the following year.

1999 - Tom Jones went to No.1 on the UK album chart with Reload, making the singer the oldest artist to score a No.1 album with new material.

2000 - John Lennon's assassin Mark Chapman was denied parole after serving 20 years in prison. Chapman was interviewed for 50 minutes by parole board members, who concluded that releasing Chapman would 'deprecate the seriousness of the crime'.

2000 - Died this day, The Cars lead singer and bass player Benjamin Orr, of cancer at the age of 44.

2006 – a survey done for the Bereavement Register in the UK discovered the song most requested at British funerals is James Blunt’s, “Goodbye my Lover”.  The survey of 5000 people found that just over half (51%) of people ask for a specific song to be played at their funeral.

The top 10 requested songs were:

2006 – Avril Lavigne apologises for spitting at photographers – but only to her fans.  She had several run-ins with the paparazzi in Los Angeles while out with her new husband, Deryck Whibley and said, “my behaviour was a reaction to the persistent attack from the paparazzi”.

2012 – Most popular song played on NZ radio over the past week has been “One More Night” – Maroon 5.
