TODAY IN HISTORY – 13th September

1944 - Born this day, Peter Cetera, lead singer, bass, Chicago, 1976 US and UK No.1 single If You Leave Me Now, solo, 1986 US No.1 and UK No.3 single Glory Of Love.

1959 - Elvis and Priscilla met in Germany.

1960 - A campaign was started in the UK to ban the American hit 'Tell Laura I Love Her' by Ray Peterson. The song was being denounced in the press as likely to inspire a teen-age "glorious death cult." The story told of a lovesick youngster who drives in a stock car race to win the hand of his sweetheart. He crashes and just before dying, groans out the words of the title.

1963 - Barbra Streisand married actor Elliot Gould, they divorced eight years later.

1963 - Graham Nash fell out of The Hollies van after a gig in Scotland. Nash checked to see if the door was locked, it wasn't and he fell out as it travelled at 40 m.p.h.

1965 - The Paul McCartney song Yesterday was released as a Beatles single in the US.

1965 - Born this day, Zak Starkey, in London, son of Ex Beatles member Ringo Starr and his wife Maureen.

1969 - John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, presented the Plastic Ono Band in concert for the first time. The appearance at the Toronto Peace Festival was Lennon's first in four years. The first hit by the new group, Give Peace a Chance, made it to No.14 on the US charts and No.2 in the UK. The Rock & Roll Revival Show also had The Doors, Chuck Berry and Little Richard on the bill.

1971 - Born this day, Stella Nina McCartney, fashion designer. Daughter of Ex-Beatle Sir Paul and Linda.

1985 - 'We Are The World' won Best Group Video and the Viewer's Choice at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York. Don Henley's 'The Boys Of Summer' video won four trophies, including Best Video. Bruce Springsteen's 'I'm On Fire' gets the nod for Best Male Video and Tina Turner won Best Female Video for 'What's Love Got To Do With It'.

1986 - Berlin went to No.1 on the US singles chart with Take My Breath Away, on the B side was The Righteous Brothers You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, both songs were featured in the film Top Gun.

1991 - Geffen Records threw a party to launch Nirvana's single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' The band ended up being thrown out of their own party after starting a food fight.

1993 – Niall Horan, born his day.  He is the blond singer (the funny one?) with sea blue eyes from boy band “One Direction”. 

1994 - Actor Johnny Depp, aged 31, was arrested in New York for allegedly trashing his posh Mark Hotel room. The case against him was essentially dropped when Depp said that he would pay the hotel for damages, which were estimated at $9,767. Police believed that Depp was drunk when he ravaged the hotel room. Depp's girlfriend, model Kate Moss, was with him at the time but wasn't arrested.

1996 - Died this day, Tupac Amaru Shakur, rap singer, died after being shot six days earlier when he was driving through Las Vegas. 13 bullets were fired into his BMW, the incident being blamed on East and West Coast Gang wars.

1996 - Both Noel and Liam Gallagher arrived back in the UK on separate flights from the US amid rumours that Oasis were splitting, a statement from the record company said their would be no live gigs but the band would continue to record.

1997 - The Verve scored their first UK No.1 single with The Drugs Don't Work.

1999 - Patsy Kensit, wife of Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, gave birth to a baby boy, Lennon Francis at Portland Hospital, London.

2000 - Elton John threw a tantrum when he was set to appear at a sell out show at the Estoril Casino near Lisbon after the audience were slow in leaving a VIP dinner for the concert room. Elton left the building and flew home on his private jet.

2003 - Michael Jackson held a charity party for 500 guests at his Neverland ranch in Santa Ynes, Santa Barbara County, with tickets costing $5,000.

2006 – Troubled singer, Whitney Houston, files for divorce from bad boy singer, Bobby Brown.  They were married on July 18 1992.

2007 – US pop star Prince plans to sue YouTube and other major websites for unauthorized use of his music in a bid to “reclaim his art on the internet”.  This follows recent calls by Elton John to ban the internet entirely for the “sake of music”.

2009 – Rapper Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swifts acceptance speech (for Female Video of the year) at the VMA’s to claim that Beyonces video is the best ever (it goes on to win Best Overall Video).  The crowd boo’s him and he is widely chastised.  He apologises.

2010 – Lady Gaga cleans up at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) winning a record 8 moonmen trophies, including best video of the year.  The outrageous singer wore a dress that appeared to be made of cuts of meat which was sure to anger the PETA crowd.

2010 - George Michael was sent to jail for eight weeks after being convicted of driving under the influence of drugs and possessing cannabis in Hampstead, north London last July. He smiled in disbelief as the sentence was passed and he was led away to the cells.

2011 – At the New Zealand Silver Scroll Awards “Love Love Love” by Avalanche City took out the Silver Scroll.  Legendary Kiwi rock band, Hello Sailor (Dave McArtney, Harry Lyon & Graham Brazier) were inducted into the NZ Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
