TODAY IN HISTORY – September 23rd

1943 - Born this day, Toni Basil, US singer, actress, dancer, 1982 US No.1 and UK No.2 single Mickey.

1943 - Born this day, Julio Iglesias, singer, 1981 UK No.1 single Begin The Beguine. The Spanish singer has sold over 100 million albums, Of All the Girls I Loved Before.

1949 - Born this day, Bruce Springsteen, in Freehold, New Jersey. During his early years 1965...played in his sister's boyfriend's group The Castiles and a trio called Earth. Manfred Mann's Earth Band scored a US No.1 single with their version of the Springsteen song Blinded By The Light. In 1989, while travelling on his motorbike from Los Angeles, Bruce called in at Matt's Saloon in Prescott, Arizona and jammed with the house band for an hour. He also donated $100,000 to a barmaids hospital bill. His 1984 album Born In The USA, topped the US chart for seven weeks, spending a total of 139 weeks on the chart.

A Platinum American Express card once belonging to Bruce was sold for $4,500 at a New York memorabilia sale. The singer had given the expired card to a waiter in a LA restaurant by mistake and let them keep it as a souvenir. In 1976, after a gig in Memphis, Bruce Springsteen took a cab to Elvis Presley's Graceland home and proceeded to climb over the wall, a guard taking him to be another crank fan apprehended the singer. Bruce came in third place in the 1987 Forbes Magazine American entertainment earners list reportedly worth $56 million.

1985 US No.2 & UK No.4 single Dancing In The Dark, 1994 UK No.2 single Streets of Philadelphia, plus over 15 other UK top 40 singles.

1968 - Working on new songs for their forthcoming album, The Beatles recorded a new John Lennon song ‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun In Your Hand’, (working title of 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun'). The title came from the cover of a gun magazine that producer George Martin showed Lennon. Jim Morrison from The Doors came to visit The Beatles in the studio and watched them recording.

1957 - The Crickets went to No.1 on the US singles chart with That'll Be The Day.

1967 - Born this day, Harry Connick Jr., singer, (We Are in Love).

1969 - A University newspaper in the US, The Northern Star, printed a story claiming that Paul McCartney had been killed in a car crash in 1966 and had been replaced by a look-a-like. It was the first of many rumours that Beatle singer Paul McCartney was dead. Its first alarming headline, published on this date, read, 'Clues Hint at Beatle Death', and it started many speculative opinions, most of which were derived from interpretations of Beatle album covers and song lyrics. US radio picked up on the claim and the story went world wide.

1974 - Died this day, Robbie Mcintosh of the Average White Band, from a heroin overdose after a Los Angeles party. Cher saved the life of fellow band member Alan Gorrie, who also overdosed.

1978 - 10CC had their third and final UK No.1 single with Dreadlock Holiday.

1980 - Bob Marley collapsed on stage during a concert at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marley had collapsed in New York's Central Park while jogging, two days before and was told to immediately cancel the US leg, but flew to Pittsburgh to perform one final performance. This was the last time Marley ever appeared on stage performing, Marley died of cancer on in May 1981.

1983 - The movie Eddie and the Cruisers was released, directed by Martin Davidson, it starred Tom Berenger, Michael Paré, Joe Pantoliano, Matthew Laurance, Helen Schneider and Ellen Barkin.

1989 - Milli Vanilli started a 2 week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with Girl I'm Gonna Miss You, the duo's second US No.1, and a No.2 hit in the UK. Also today they went to No.1 on the US album chart with Girl You Know It's True.

1992 - Actress Daryl Hannah broke up with Jackson Browne, claiming he assaulted her.

2001 - Kylie Minogue started a five week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with Can't Get You Out Of My Head. The song was co-written by former Mud guitarist Rob Davis.

2004 - A bodyguard for rapper Lil' Kim was sentenced to 12 years in prison after admitting firing at least 20 times in a shoot-out with a rival gang. The judge sentencing Suif Jackson, said society needed protection from a gun-toting man with five convictions. The shooting took place when the entourages of Lil' Kim and Capone-N-Noreaga crossed at a New York radio station.

2009 – The most popular song played on NZ radio this past week is “Sweet Dreams” by Beyonce.
