TODAY IN HISTORY – September 4th

1937 - Born this day, Freddy Fender [Baldemar Huerta], in San Benito, Texas, country singer, actor.

1959 - Bobby Darin's Mack the Knife was banned from radio, or at least from WCBS Radio in New York City. The ban was a result of an increase in teenage stabbings in the city.

1964 - The Animals House of the Rising Sun hit No.1 on the US pop chart.

1965 - The Who had their van stolen containing over £5,000 worth of equipment outside the Battersea Dogs Home. The band were inside the home at the time buying a guard dog. The van was later recovered.

1965 - The Beatles started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with title of their second film Help, it was the group's ninth US No.1.

1968 - The Bee Gees had their second UK No.1 single with 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You'. The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife.

1970 - George Harrison released My Sweet Lord in the US.

1971 - Taken from the album Ram, Paul and Linda McCartney went to No.1 on the US singles chart with the US only released Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey, Paul's first solo No.1.

1971 - Born this day, Ty Longley, guitar, Great White. Killed on 20 February 2003 along with 100 fans, after pyrotechnics ignited a club during a gig in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The band had the 1989 hit with a cover of Ian Hunter’s Once Bitten, Twice Shy.

1976 - Abba started a six week run at No.1 in the UK with Dancing Queen.

1976 - The Bee Gees went to No.1 on the US singles chart with You Should Be Dancing, the groups third US No.1. It made No.5 in the UK.

1976 - Fleetwood Mac went to No.1 on the US album chart with their self-titled album after being on the charts for over a year. The album went on to sell over 5 million copies in the US and was the first of three No.1 albums for the group.

1981 - Born this day, Beyonce Knowles, singer, Destiny's Child, 2000 US No.1 single Say My Name, 2001 US and UK NO.1 single and album Survivor, Bills, bills, bills.

1982 - After six weeks, Eye of the Tiger, by the group Survivor, dropped out of the top spot on the US music charts. The song, from the movie, Rocky III, dropped all the way to No.2, for two weeks, then to No.3 for one week and to No.4 for two weeks before starting to fade. It was the group’s biggest, earning them a platinum record.

1982 - The Steve Miller Band started a two week run at No.2 on the US singles chart with Abracadabra. It was the group's third US No.1, and was also a No.2 hit in the UK.

1986 - After just getting his driving license back after a five-year suspension, Gregg Allman from The Allman Brothers Band was arrested in Florida for drunk driving.

1991 - Died this day, country music star Dottie West, in Nashville, Tennessee, of liver and heart failure as a result of a one-car crash earlier in the week. The popular singer underwent three operations, but doctors were unable to repair her ruptured liver. West was 58 years old.

1996 - Oasis created outrage at the MTV awards when during the bands performance of Champagne Supernova at New Yorks Radio City Hall, Liam spat on stage and threw a beer into the crowd.

2006 - Mike Gibbins drummer with Badfinger died in his sleep at his Florida home aged 56. Badfinger had the 1970 UK No.4 & US No.7 single 'Come And Get It'. He had also been a member of The Iveys during the 60’s.

2008 - The first guitar torched on stage by Jimi Hendrix sold for £280,000 at an auction of rock memorabilia. The Fender Stratocaster was burned at the end of a show at the Astoria in Finsbury Park, north London, in 1967. The sale held in London also included the Beatles' first management contract, signed in 1962 by all four members of the group and manager Brian Epstein, sold for £240,00.

2012 - One Direction won a legal dispute over the right to keep using their band name. A US punk group of the same name challenged the UK boyband earlier this year, saying that they had called themselves One Direction first. One Direction US sued the British band for $1million (£630,000) in damages and asked for a share of The X Factor stars' royalties. One Direction US would now be known as Uncharted Shores.

2013 – Most played song on NZ radio this week has been “Counting Stars” – One Republic.
