1939 - Born this day, John Stewart, singer, songwriter, The Kingston Trio. Wrote the Monkees hit Daydream Believer. solo, (US No.5 single Gold).

1945 - Born this day, Al Stewart, singer, musician, guitarist, 1977 UK No.31 and US No.8 single single Year Of The Cat.

1946 - Born this day, Freddie Mercury [Bulsara], in Zanzebar, Africa, singer, songwriter, Queen, 1975 UK No.1 single Bohemian Rhapsody, also UK No.1 in 1991 plus over 40 other UK top 40 singles. 1980 US No.1 single Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Solo, 1987 UK No.4 single The Great Pretender. Died 24 November 1991.

1956 - Johnny Cash entered the US record charts with I Walk the Line. Cash's debut hit song climbed to No.17.

1956 - Elvis Presley surprised his mother with a gift of a pink Cadillac. The car remained in the Presley family and eventually went on display at Graceland.

1964 - The Animals started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with House Of The Rising Sun. When first released the record company printed the time of the song at three minutes, feeling that the real time of four was too long. It was replaced at the top by Roy Orbison's Oh, Pretty Woman.

1965 - The Rolling Stones recorded their eighth single 'Get Off Of My Cloud' at RCA studios in Hollywood. The song peaked at No.1 in the US and the UK.

1966 - John Lennon started work on his role as Private Gripweed in the film 'How I Won The War'. The black comedy directed by Richard Lester, was filmed in Spain in Almería Province and saw Lennon, taking a long-overdue break from the Beatles after nearly four years of constant touring.

1969 - Born this day, Dweezil Zappa, musician, guitarist, son of Frank Zappa, brother of singer Moon Unit Zappa

1970 - Janis Joplin started recording sessions recording a version of the Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster song 'Me and Bobby McGee'. Joplin, (who was a lover and a friend of Kristofferson's from the beginning of her career to her death), topped the US singles chart with the song in 1971 after her death, making the song the second posthumous No.1 single in US chart history after '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay' by Otis Redding.

1976 - Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington was seriously injured in a car crash in Florida.

1981 - Soft Cell were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of 'Tainted Love.' The song had been a hit for Gloria Jones in 1964. (Jones who became Marc Bolan's girlfriend was the driver of the car, that crashed and killed Bolan on 16 September 1977. Jones nearly died in the accident).

1981 - Stevie Nicks went to No.1 on the US album with Bella Donna, featuring the tracks ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’ (the Tom Petty duet), ‘Leather and Lace’ (with Don Henley), ‘Edge of Seventeen’ and ‘After the Glitter Fades.’

1987 - Ian Asbury of The Cult was arrested after a show in Vancouver ended in a riot. Staff at the concert claimed they were assaulted by Asbury who spent the night in the cells.

1992 - John Cougar Mellencamp married model Elaine Irwin.

1998 - Rocker Tommy Lee, convicted of spousal abuse for kicking wife Pamela Anderson Lee, was released from jail early for good behaviour after serving less than four months of a six-month sentence. The Motley Crue drummer would be on probation for three years. He must also donate $5,000 to a shelter for battered women, avoid drugs and alcohol, stay at least 100 yards away from his wife, attend anger management classes, and undergo random drug tests. In addition, he must perform 200 hours of community service. His wife filed for divorce after reporting the attack. The couple married in 1995.

1998 - Aerosmith scored their first US No.1 single with the Diane Warren written song I Don't Want To Miss A Thing. The song, from the movie, Armageddon, was the first single by Aerosmith to reach No.1. It stayed at the top through the entire month of September.

1998 - The Manic Street Preachers scored their first UK No.1 single with If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, the groups 19th hit and the first Welsh act to have a No.1 single since Shakin Stevens in 1985.

1999 - After spending 58 weeks on the UK album chart, Shania Twain went to No.1 with 'Come On Over'. It became the best-selling country music album, and the second best-selling studio album by a female act. To date, the album has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.

2002 - Heather Mills, Sir Paul McCartney's wife, accepted £50,000 libel damages over an article in the Sunday Mirror. The paper had suggested that Mills had acted dishonestly over cash collected for an earthquake appeal.
